what do you think about luck?
I don’t know much about percentages or calculating odds. However I am inclined to believe in these factors over simple luck. That said, I am a complete pessimist, and currently I am confused. It is Sunday. That should signal a new week. Last week passed me through the fires of Murphy’s Hell. Everything that was movable collapsed, expect the tree I tried to fall (ran out of firewood). The tree of course stayed standing upright while the chain of my saw managed to tie itself into knots.
Lost the clutch in my pick-up. Lost some money into the sinkhole known as the Dodge Caravan (POS Edition). Spent 8 hours building a new website for our business. In the ninth hour, it developed some random coding error (I wasn’t even messing with the code yet). Had to sack everything! Great times.
In a few minutes we’re having an open house. Molly says, “Today might be the day…” I finish her sentence, “that the house catches on fire and the dog runs away.” Seems funny that we clean the house so thoroughly. Kind of like telling a small lie. We’re not pigs, but we’re not the family that replaces the sugar bowl after each cup of coffee either. Anyhoo…
Luck. Is it real? Is it a test from God? Is it punishment for something? Or is it just chance; you know, life? I know all the cool verses, for those of you inclined to spout them in response. Spout away, but then tell me WHY…
Go ahead. Now, leave a comment…
See you tomorrow.

I’m personally of the opinion that God does not keep your engine from seizing up if you never change your oil. I am also of the opinion that the small inconveniences we inflict ourselves with by having things like cutting edge technology hold no candle to drought, infant mortality, plagues, genocide and senseless violence against innocents as a daily experience. The fact that we deem our inconveniences as worthy of a whine is merely a sign of our narcissism, softness and lack of perspective on the reality of true evil in the world. Oops… was that too harsh?
Are you saying I need an oil change? hehe, maybe I worded the above poorly… Though I used myself as the example, the concluding question wasn’t intended to be personal. So, no, it isn’t too harsh. Guess I’m just wondering people’s opinions on what is God’s “role”, especially given the ongoing presence of the big evil stuff you mentioned, in the ordinary stuff.
Actually it wasn’t “personal” toward you, more like a general observation of how most of us seem to react to our accumulated inconveniences in our culture. Does God lead us to a parking space close to the door of the mall? Does He “allow Satan” to crash our hard drives in the middle of an important project? Or is it Satan and God at all… maybe its just the way the fallen world works and the world’s natural courses fall on the just and the unjust and it all has nothing to do with whether God loves us more than someone else. Or maybe, if I Cor. is true that God will not allow us to be tempted beyond our ability, then we are above all the weakest of men because of the small things we get tweaked about… if we had REAL problems we’d be atheists. More later maybe, gotta go be inconvenienced all day to feed my family.
